A judge’s ruling on Thursday that it was in the nine-month old boy’s best interests to withdraw his life sustaining treatment. The High Court ruling gives doctors at an unnamed NHS trust powers to turn off the ventilator keeping “baby OT” alive.

The facts:

  1. The boy have a rare metabolic disorder.
  2. The boy has brain damage and respiratory failure.

In lieu of the above facts, the court themselves said that they felt it was for the boy’s best interest.

This is a very harsh reality. I cannot fathom the fact that they can come to such a decision and agree whole-heartedly to this ruling. I think this is similar to legalising euthanasia. Just what do they think they can derive from this ? I can think of a few issues from this ruling.

  • By doing this, it basically undermines the basis of law and public morality.
  • The basis of excruciating ‘hard cases’ would result in its being routinely practiced on a large scale.
  • This would undermine the financing and provision of proper care and ultimately prove to be cost-efficient for the hospital staff.

Such a disturbing piece of news. Clearly, the LORD JUSTICE have provide injustice with the rejection of the importance and value of human life. The boy’s life will be taken away in less than 24 hours from now.

May he be cherish by those who loved him.

Your list of “facts” omit that the doctors say the baby is in intolerable pain. The poor thing would be long dead without aggressive medical intervention. This isn’t a question of “euthenasia” – it is about keeping a baby alive artificially, in immense pain.

This is a horrible situation, but even more ghastly is the use of poor baby OT as a politicial football buy those who wish to puush the religious beliefs on everyone else.

    Dear PTET,

I’m not coming from a religious angle on this issue. You wouldn’t want to know what is in store from there.

But from a morally sound society, as a country who place emphasis towards justice and proper upbringing, isn’t it the job of the doctors to save their patients’ lives ?

You think the baby is being used as an object of ridicule ? We’re talking about human lives here. Where is the love among human beings have gone to ? Sadly, in our effort to improve on our advancements towards technology, we have forgotten who we are and where we have come from.

I bet that you wouldn’t be saying such things had it be your own child in the death bed.

Why must we let ourselves become God and dictate how long a human can live in this world ?
