The one about the miscarriage
By now, some of you may have realised that my wife had just suffered a miscarriage. Hence the past two entries may have sounded rather more of frustration on my part.
I am sick and tired of young doctors that are constantly rotating through different training programmes, and as a consequence of the new regulations to limit their working hours, there is lack of day to day continuity of care at all junior grades. Patients are looked after by continuously changing teams of doctors and nurses.
I criticised doctors not about their clinical competence; rather, they seem to reflect a deficiency of the basic skills of handling sick people as humans, poor communication, lack of kindness, thoughtlessness, and, in short, all the facets of good interpersonal relationships that society has a right to demand of its doctors.
Can such attitudes be taught?
Granted, I do not think any medical school can teach a young person how to be understanding and caring. This can come only from experience of life. Sigh.
Missed abortion, has such a devastating and unpredictable effect on many patients and their families that the protean goals of good pastoral care will always be difficult to attain.
It seems you never really know what you have until it’s gone.
And yet, you found your own way back to God. In the stillness of the mystery of the moment when your heart beat its last….

Breaking down the communication barrier
There comes a time in a relationship when one or both partners might feel shy about broaching a certain topic. This could happen for long-term couples or fledgling unions in the first six weeks of dating. Perhaps you are ready to see the other person more and aren’t sure how to say it, maybe you are ready to take the plunge and swap keys, or then again, it might be something sexual.
We constantly reiterate that communication is the cornerstone of any relationship. Maintaining an atmosphere of honesty and trust is vital to the success of any relationship. Your partner must always feel that he/she can come to you with certain issues and know that they will be received well. And you must provide that atmosphere for your honey in return.
So how do we communicate on issues that we are too shy to discuss then ?
